Classroom Programs
The science-based programs listed below are available to Licking County teachers. In-class presentations are interactive and include hands-on demnstrations and materials for your students.
Breads of the Harvest
Discover the science nutrition and history of bread baking since the Pilgrims! Your class will learn about the Pilgrims struggle to provide food in a new land, the business of baking bread, the chemistry that makes bread rise and more. Suggested activities include: Mayflower Math, a nutrition worksheet and baking individual loaves of bread. Recommended for grades 3-6.
Chick Embryology
Which came first...the chicken or the egg?! Your students will start with eggs and experience the life-cycle process firsthand when you hatch chicks in your classroom. Learn about the 21-day developmemt of chick embryos with this program that includes fertile eggs, table-top incubator, brooder, egg candling, curriculum materials and all supplies. Offered March, April and May each spring. (An additional $10 fee is collected for this program to cover materials.)
Go Plants!
Seeds, roots, stems, leaves and flowers - your plant study will blossom with this five week, five unit lesson. Plant science comes alive with activities where students sort and sprout seeds, follow the growth of roots and stems and learn about plant life cycles.
Recommended for grades 3-4
Invent
George Washington Carver serves as the role model for this program that focuses on invention, creative thinking and analysis. Explore the contributions of African-American inventors and discover how technology and inventions have changed to meet people’s needs. Students can learn about polymers by making Magical Glob, understand the importance of communication on the Underground Railroad and use teamwork to find solutions. A great program for February’s Black History Month.
Recommended for grades 4-8.
Rockets Away!
3…2…1…blastoff! This unit is designed to stimulate your class’ interest in math, engineering, aerospace and physics through the exploration of rocketry science. Hands-on experiments culminate in the design, construction and launch of 2-liter bottle rockets.

Team Up For Good Nutrition
Your class will work together to learn healthy food choices, positive eating habits and how to promote overall good health through wise diet choices. Students can team up for nutrition role plays, learn to read and understand food labels, participate in a classroom-based supermarket scavenger hunt and play to win at Nutrition Jeopardy. Don’t forget that March is National Nutrition Month.

Weather Together
Why is the sky blue? What happens when a cold front meets a warm front? What’s in the atmosphere? Your class will discover these answers and more as they explore the influence of sunlight, gravity and moisture on the atmosphere, what causes different types of weather and how to forecast climate changes.
